Curriculum

Curriculum

At Ms. Kirrena’s, we believe in nurturing the whole child — socially, emotionally, academically, and culturally — during these critical early years of growth.

Our curriculum is designed to build strong, confident, capable learners who feel connected to themselves, their community, and the wider world.

We thoughtfully align our learning experiences with the Georgia Early Learning and Development Standards (GELDS) while also going beyond them to reflect what our children truly need: cultural pride, life skills, emotional resilience, and real-world understanding.

Our 10-month curriculum follows a series of intentionally crafted monthly themes that blend:

  • Black History (Past & Present)
  • Life Skills and Emotional Intelligence
  • Homesteading and Nature Exploration
  • Financial Literacy and Healthy Living
  • Creative Arts and Expression
  • Community and Belonging

Each week centers around a historical figure or cultural leader and weaves in:

  • Books and story-based learning
  • Art, movement, and sensory experiences
  • Dramatic play and real-world problem solving
  • Daily science prompts and themed songs
  • Hands-on life skill practice
  • Family engagement and “home connection” suggestions

Our approach is hands-on, inquiry-based, and deeply personal — meeting each child where they are and helping them grow with confidence and care.

Screen Time Policy

Television and passive screen time are not part of our normal daily routine. However, we may occasionally use brief, high-quality video clips (e.g., music videos, read-alouds, or virtual museum tours) to enrich a theme or spark discussion.

All content is:

  • Pre-screened by Ms. Kirrena
  • Limited to no more than 60 minutes per week
  • Aligned with our learning themes, values, and standards
  • Free from violence and commercialism

We believe learning is active, social, and grounded in the real world — and our use of media reflects that belief.

Assessments and Growth Tracking

At Ms. Kirrena’s, we value meaningful, respectful observation over rigid standardized testing.

We conduct initial assessments at enrollment and follow up quarterly using developmentally appropriate checklists, anecdotal notes, and theme-aligned reflections. These tools help us identify strengths, developmental milestones, and areas that may need support.

Our assessment approach emphasizes partnership with families. We share updates regularly and invite families to collaborate on goal-setting for their child’s growth.

If additional needs are identified, we are committed to helping families access resources, referrals, and early intervention programs to ensure every child receives the support they deserve.
